Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition – Goodbye Real Life
So as of last Tuesday we have spent a lot of our time exploring the wasteland. Yes, our Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Special Edition arrived at last. We pre-ordered from Game many months ago and it’s the first game since I don’t know when that I’ve been desperate to play.
The Pip-Boy Edition cost £99.99 and they sold out within hours of being released. We actually have two but one of them is remaining sealed to hopefully make some good money in the future…A total killer knowing we have a second copy in the house when we both want to play.
What makes the special edition so exciting? The replica Pip-Boy of course! It’s pretty damn amazing, even if it is just a piece of plastic. It’s actually so much more than plastic; it’s friggin’ amazing if you’re a fan of the Fallout franchise. The detail is good, the metal clasp gives it an extra feel of quality and that clasp combined with the strong Velcro inside does secure the Pip-Boy securely onto your arm. And let’s not forget that you can fit your phone into the Pip-Boy and use the Pip-Boy app as you play, it’s just like having the real deal on your arm and that’s a great feeling to have. You can use the app without the Pip-Boy and it still works really well, but I’ve noticed it does make my HTC One really hot, almost too hot to touch, a little concerning.
“It’s a second screen experience, and usually I find second screen experiences, they’re generally just stupid gimmicks. Um, but as far as stupid gimmicks goes, I assure you it’s the best fucking one I have ever seen. It is awesome” Todd Howard Bethesda Showcase, E3 2015.
In the collector’s edition, you also get a steel case for the game, a Vault-Tec Perk poster, some inserts that you can use to secure your phone in the Pip-Boy (provided you have one of the compatible handsets, we don’t sadly) and a user guide for the Pip-Boy. All of this is presented in a large case that looks smart on its own.
Is it worth the money? Hell yes! If you can get hold of one on eBay or from a private seller then I can’t recommend it enough. If you’re considering hunting one down for your gaming partner or kid for Christmas, I assure you they won’t be disappointed.
Fallout 4 is immersive without the Pip-Boy though, so if you only get the game on its own you’re still going to get swept up in this apocalyptic world. It’s hard to give a review of the game right now as I’ve only put in about 8 hours (damn you work!) and there are many more to go. However, first impressions? BEST GAME OF THE YEAR! From the start your heart begins to race as the sirens call, you’re left shocked within a few minutes and then you’re suddenly out there in the wasteland, exploring this post nuclear apocalyptic world that is fighting to survive and progress.
If you’ve played Fallout 3 the whole game will come naturally to you. You’ll find the same creatures and enemies as found in Fallout 4. You can go an explore anywhere you want, but some of the buildings are impossible to enter. You can spend your time working through the quests but the freedom of this game allows you to just do whatever the hell you want to do. Building and crafting is great fun or you can just walk around exploring with your chosen companion – Dog Meat is your buddy from early on and I think it’s fair to say, I love that dog! I will say that Fallout 4 does seem to be a lot harder than 3 and I’m not the only one saying that. The good news is if you do want an easier time you can change the gameplay to ‘easy’ or even ‘very easy’ if you wish.
It’s a massive hit, it’s breaking records. PornHub have said they experienced a 10% drop in visits on the launch day (hilarious!) and Bethesda have said they shipped 12 million copies of Fallout 4 on launch day, a total worth of $750 million’s worth! Follow up shipments have already been heading out too, indicating the first batches have already sold out, which will make it one of the best sellers this year, if not the best seller. It sure deserves to be, it’s a masterpiece.
All in all the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy edition is an excellent addition for anyone who loves collectables, game memorabilia or for any massive fan of Fallout. The game itself is a must own title that needs to be in your collection. This is gaming heaven; it’s just a shame that there aren’t more games like this. At least I have a few hundred hours of gameplay yet to enjoy and then hopefully Bethesda will let us know there’s a follow-up to Skyrim in the works….
