Nintendo Switch Online Arrives September 2018

Nintendo Switch Online Service

Nintendo Switch Online is set for release this September, here’s what we know so far.

Nintendo Switch Online will allow users to play Switch compatible games online and have access to classic NES titles with some online functionality as a bonus. Most of the games will have a back up save data feature and there will be additional features available via an official app provided the game is supported.

The pricing has been shared in the US currency, but it does give us an idea of what we’re looking at (but knowing the UK it will probably cost more):

  • $3.99 for 1 month
  • $7.99 for 3 months
  • $19.99 for a year

There’s a family membership available for $34.99 (for 12 months) that allows up to 8 users to have access to the online services, even if they have different systems. This could be useful for larger families or house shares if everyone chips in.

Classic NES Titles On the Switch

Subscribers to the online service can expect access to a compilation of NES games but only 20 will be available on release. We have been informed of 10 of the titles and more games will be announced at a later date, plus more titles will be made available in the future. The 10 games are:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climber
  • Donkey Kong
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Soccer
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Tennis
  • Mario
  • Mario Bros.

Online Gaming

You’ll need to sign up to the Nintendo Switch Online service if you want to play your games online, whether playing co-op or competitively. The online service will be compatible with many current and upcoming titles including Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

It is worth noting that the online service will not support all the Nintendo titles, so do check before you buy closer to the release date. Currently, we have no details on what games are not supported but hopefully news will be provided in the months ahead.
